Default Can we talk about probiotics?

So I'm a believer now, but I need to know more. Like is florostor the only recommended probiotic for children? What's a good website to go to for info.
Dh was diagnosed recently with ibs and I really do need to get him started on it but the section at wf was daunting to say the least. I know I need something tasteless and drinkable for the children but I just have no idea where to even start.
I really could use some advice from those of you who use probiotics for your family.

Our pediatrician recommended Bio Gaia probiotics straws. They are straws that are similar in size to the straws that come with juice boxes but they are lined lactobacillus. You can put them into any liquid. Found them here for you to see: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/cr/B001X...ef=aw_d_cr_hpc
we don't use them every day but we should. DD tends to have lots of tummy aches and these help with her issues. DH bought ours from CVS, you don't need a prescription but they do keep them behind the pharmacy. My kids call them "medicine straws" but have always taken them without complaint. Usually when I give one to DD, DS will ask if he can have one too.

I've used many different brands but have been sticking with Jarrow brand cause I like the Fem dolphilus for me anyways. For the kids Jarrow makes a childrens formula as does Udo's Choice

you can easily mix some powder in yogurt, smoothies, applesauce etc.

Jarrow makes chewable tablets for kids as well

DD loves this kefir drink called ProBugs:

I'm trying to save it for when we go out and buy larger containers of kefir for home because the probugs are a little expensive.

Floroster is just a brand. So no, definitely not the only one rec. for children.

What is most important is that you get the correct strains for your age (and there are some that are specific to women's health too). After that, amount of cultures is important too.

Each type of strain covers a different aspect of gut/digestive/immune system health. The one most common on store shelves is acidophilus--but that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many other things going on in our body that it's good to have other bases covered as well.

    Fact of the day:
*Did you know 70% of your immune system is in your gut?

For infants and children: try to find something containing a combo of:
-bifidobacterium infantis (naturally occuring in breastmilk)
    -bifidobacterium longum
    -lactobacillus acidolphilus
    -lactobacillus rhamnosus

For adults: some basic good ones to have
    L. Rhamnosus
    B. longum
    L. plantarum
    L. casei
    L. acidophilus
    B. lactis
    B. bifidum
    L. brevis

These two links are what I have in my fridge right now. I have found they work every bit as well as the more expensive brands. But if you want to order something name-brand, Jarrows and Udo's are the two best choices IMO.

    FYI...
I have been making my own milk kefir and water kefir at home. It's very cheap and easy!

We use Culturelle for ourselves and our kids. For DD1 she gets the chewable which she likes and DD1 the powered kind which we can mix into any cold beverage or pureed food. For DH and I we use the caplet form. Culturelle only contains lactobacillus but I live in the middle of know where and it's the one kind I can find locally.
Mom to two amazing DDs ('07 & '09) and a fur baby.

Gluten free since Nov '11 after non-celiac gluten sensitive diagnosis. Have had great improvement or total elimination of: migraines, bloating/distention, heartburn, cystic acne, canker sores, bleeding gums, eczema on elbows, dry skin and scalp, muscle cramps, PMS, hair loss, heart palpitations, fatigue. I'm amazed.

I recall reading that the best probiotics are not the shelf stable kind but the refrigerated kind. Anyone have an opinion on this? Are the vitacost ones shelf stable?

I prefer the refrigerated types. I know a study a few years ago showed the counts were higher in the refrigerated varieties.

OP, I would go to the literature and see what strains they are using to help with IBS and go from there. I know the medical lit usually specifies what strains they are using, and I know there's been more stuff coming out about the benefits for IBS.

We use Jarrow and Udo, sometimes the acidophilus pearls. We aren't using it for IBS though, so I have no idea what the ideal strain is for IBS off the top of my head. I'd pull up some studies and see what strain they've been using and look for those strains in the brand you select.

PP is correct that different strains dominate at different stages of life (baby vs. child vs. adult).

Can you open the Udo's choice Children's capsules and mix them into food? Do either of the Udo's choice or Jarrow flavor yogurt and applesauce when mixing them in?
