we do the same thing with crab every time. layer of cream cheese, layer of cocktail sauce and layer of crab and some crackers for dipping. very basic but very good :)

    HOT CRAB DIP

    24 ounces cream cheese
    1 cup Miracle Whip
3 packages crab meat -- chopped
    2 teaspoons mustard
    1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
    1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
    2 teaspoons powdered sugar
    2 teaspoons onion powder

Mix everything but crab. Drop crab in and mix till smooth. Microwave to heat. Serve with tortilla chips.

*** I also add parmesan cheese and a little milk to thin the dip. ***

(I put this in a fondue pot. Also, if it's just for me, I cut the recipe down to 1/3.)

here is my mom's well loved recipe (from her friend claudia :)

    Claudia's Crab Dip

Mix and bake at 350 for 20 minutes:

    8 oz. Cream cheese
    1 can crab
1 ½ teaspoons horseradish (yuck, but it somehow makes it better)
    2 teaspoons chopped onion
    2 teaspoons lemon juice
    ½ + cup chopped artichokes
    dash Tabasco
(I add some Mayo, especially if I don't have enough cream cheese or want it to be a bit runnier)

Top with parmesan cheese and bake. Instead of baking you can warm it in the microwave and put it under the broiler to brown if you are already using the oven.

    Garnish with fresh parley

    Julie,

I'm sure a 1 lb package would be fine. Is it about the size of a hot dog package, but not 2 layers thick? I didn't know that there were various sizes!
