I contacted a photography institute from Montgomery County, PA (near Philly). They referred me to a recent graduate who has 6 years of experience and whose costs are well below average ($700-$1200, depending on 1/2 or full day):

Antonelli Institute of Art and Photography
    Erdenheim, PA
    (800)722-7871

The jury's still out on her quality, since our wedding isn't until September. Also, I should note that she is using 35mm, not medium-format.

Hope this helps, for all you Eastern PA brides and grooms!

    Cheers,
    Colleen

    Some other resources in CA

The Academy of Art University in San Francisco 800.544.ARTS Has both Grad. and Undergrad students. Some of which are EXCELLENT. You may try calling and getting a direct number for the Photo Department. It may take a while to acctually get names, but keep on it.

Also, Art Center in Pasadena has a great Photo Department.

    Good Luck

Default A list of Photography Schools

    Hi everybody --

Here are a bunch of suggestions on where you might go to find a student photographer. After posting in the Photography Students topic, I've gotten emails over the past few months asking me for more suggestions on where to go to find photography students. I don't mind at all -- I'm glad to help! I figured that there are more brides out there who could use the information I've managed to compile, so here it is.

Please note that this list is not a reccomendation of any school -- it's simply a list to help you in your search for a photographer that won't cost a months salary!

In no particular order, they are:

    [/ul]

I'll update this list as I learn of other places with photography programs. Be sure and check your local community college -- often, there is at least some sort of photography class offered, and you may find a talented beginner!

If you're not sure how to go about approaching students at these schools, here's what I suggest doing. Either email or call the people in charge of the photo program and tell them that you're interested in having a student photograph your wedding -- ask them how they normally handle requests like that. I know at my school if it came in via email, the email was then forwarded to all photo students. If it was a call, they usually told the person to come in and post flyers with their contact info and requirements around the building.

Some other suggestions if you decide to investigate using a student:

As a recent graduate of a well-respected School of Photography, I can tell you that there are some VERY good photography students out there. Most students will work for less than a "professional" photographer, because they need the exposure, and the money certainly does come in handy! Photography is one of the most expensive professions to go into!

Try to find sophomore or better, unless the portfolio is stunning. Most freshmen are still getting a handle on their own work. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find a freshman who has had considerable experience.

Insist on seeing a portfolio -- most likely there is no "wedding" portfolio per se, so ask to see examples of both portrait work and photojournalistic work (also known as candids). Good things to look for are skill in lighting, properly processed prints (if they print their own images), and a variety of images/angles of the same subject. Someone who stays in the same spot at all times is a no-no.

You want to pick someone whose personal "style" will mesh with yours. A photographer with an avante garde style will most likely NOT suit you if you are looking for traditional wedding photographs. However, if you're willing to try something different, you're very likely to end up with some absolutely fantastic photographs of your wedding.

A word of note -- because these students are literally students, they do have other photography assignemnts going on rather than just your wedding. If you're looking for someone who will be devoted JUST to your wedding, you might want to think twice about using a student. Of course, if they're on summer break, it would probably work well for you!

I think that covers most of the bases! Let me know if you have any further questions!

    Best wishes!
    --Donna
