my DS was into Legos at age 5. He also loved his big hotwheels track with the loops and such. Matchbox Pop Up Playsets were popular then too. A marble run could be a good thing too. Magnatiles could be good.

I guess it depends on the kid... some are obsessed with Pokemon or action figures or legos or sports.

    Do you have a budget?

DS will be 5 at Christmas. He's just getting into Lego (my MIL kept DH's and just mailed them to us). I bought him some Playmobil for Christmas, which will be new for him (my parents are giving him the Playmobil camper, and I found a castle for free on Craigslist). To go with the castle, books on knights, and CDs from Greathall (King Arthur and Robin Hood CDs). I also got him a Playmobil gas station since he's very into cars and vehicles (I think the gas station was $10
I got a few Calico Critters and accessories for he and DD to share, but I'm not sure how into those he will be. We'll see.

He spends a lot of time with art supplies, doing a lot of writing, drawing, etc.
Stuff we have that he likes already:
    Remote control car
While on vacation we did RideMakerz (like build a bear, but with vehicles). He's getting some accessories to add onto his vehicle in his stocking. I don't t hink there are many locations for this yet nationally, but it was a lot of fun!
    Books on CD
    Chapter books
    Marble Maze
    vehicles of all types
practical life stuff...kid sized shovel, rake, wheelbarrow
outdoor stuff like balance bike, etc.

If family members ask for ideas, I'll suggest:
    Lego
    maybe K'nex or Kid K'nex
    art stuff
    Magnatiles
    Kapla or Keva planks
eta: Snap Circuits or similar type of toy

My five year old spends most of his time with:

    *Superstructs and building type toys.
*Science kits, like magnet and electricity experiments
*Books- non-fiction on topics of interest, funny kid fiction like Junie B Jones and Amelia Bedelia.
    *Art and crafty stuff
    *Toy cars
    *Dollhouse

He goes ga-ga over legos at other people's houses and is getting some for Christmas.

We spent time at a large indy toy store yesterday and some other fun things DS enjoyed:
    Magnetic building toys (zoob car?)
    Something similar to magnatiles
Quadrilla (we have a different marble run but he enjoyed this)
    slot cars
    rokenbok set

for his 5th bday I'm considering a bike (possibly the Trek Float), a used digital camera under $50, or something like a slot car race track setup (costco has a matchbox one right now).

I thought I'd add those after our adventure at the toystore yesterday.
