Well, I guess I should have paid more attention to all those solids posts, but it seemd so far in the future. Now, DD is getting ready for solids and I'd like to make some of her food, but not enough that warrants buying a book or special equipment. Namely, I'm thinking I can do squash, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans - things that my mother grows in her garden and gives to me. This is what I'm thinking I should do. Would you please tell me if I'm way off base?

Squash and sweet potatoes - bake with no seasoning, puree with my hand blender, then freeze in ice cube trays. Defrost, heat, mix with EBM to get the consistency she wants, then feed.

Peas and beans - same as above but steam for initial cooking instead of bake. I'm worried about the pea skins and bean strings, though. Is a hand blender enough to make these veggies smooth enough for her?

Thanks, ladies!

You might want to check out www.wholesomebabyfood.com They have baby food recipes online and a lot more info so that may help.

I think it's great that you are going to use veggies from your mom's garden - it should be so much fresher than anything bought in a store. I'm not an expert in making baby food myself (I am just starting to research that and will start feeding solids to my DD in a few weeks) but what you are describing (the baking, freezing in ice cube trays, etc.) sounds right. I would think that a hand blender would be fine; there are also small food mills (about $12) you can purchase which probably would work fine also. The website I mentioned may be able to help you with what equipment you need.

Thanks, Jennifer. I just checked out that site - it has lots of information and even addressed the "how to get peas and green beans smooth" issue!
