I have heard it's possible to register for larger expensive items (sports equipment, grills, etc.)and then guests can purchase a portion of an item, for instance put $100 towards the total cost of an item and then others can add to that. But I can't remember where I read about this service, does anybody have any idea where or how this can be done?

I wish I could help you! My relatives keep telling me nobody will understand "nonconventional" approaches to bridal registry. If it's not BBY or Fortunoffs forget it, it does not compute, I will be plagued with candy dishes.
I need to find more places that do cash refunds. Bed Bath and Beyond does, and that's been covered.
I am really upset that HUD discontinued their bridal registry program. People could contribute money to a home down payment. Now that's something we really need. Not formal china.

I know people who have registered for a large number of items at big department stores (e.g. Macy's). After the wedding, they open up a store credit card account, return the gifts for a credit to the card (not a store merchandise credit) and then close the account. The store gives you a cash payment for the credit on the credit card account (again, instead of a merchandise credit.) Not all stores do this - it depends on their policy - but one particular friend did this so that they could buy very nice dining room furniture as they did not need china, crystal, and all that.

I just registerd at crate and barrel, and their return policy is very good, whatever we don't need I'll be able to exchange for the full price and exange it for rugs, drapes, garden material, a nice balcony umbrella, etc...
