Hi:
I just recently got engaged and we set a date. I was wondering if it is economically wise to spend money on "save the date" notices. Are they a new trend? We're not sending out engagement announcements, so I was curious if most people do "save the dates" now and if it would be advisable to send them out.
Thanks!

The only reason that we're sending save the dates for my daughter's wedding is because we have a lot of invitees from out of town, and it's in a popular vacation area at the busiest time of year. Otherwise, they're not necessary-especially if you need to watch every penny.

I went to Staples and bought the print-it-yourself notecards. They cost $16 for 50. It took some time to design it, make sure it prints correctly, and print, but I thought it was worth it. I wanted people to know so they could book plane tickets and hotels. Some of our guests are coming from Europe, and a month or two isn't enough notice. I only sent it to people from out of town, or people that were really important to us to make sure they could attend. The total cost, including postage, was about $40 (plus my time).

I found save the date magnets on ebay and paid 50 cents each. They were custom made to match the design I wanted and Kate was great to work with.

We sent out Save-the-Date cards because 80% of our guests will be coming from out of town. We used VistaPrint.com and they turned out great! We had 100 cards printed on both sides (one side color, one side black and white) for under $40. Use the discount code WSCONSUMER2 during the checkout to get 35% off family products (ie. invitations, save the dates, return labels, announcements) Hope this info helps!

I mailed out "save the date" post cards to all the out-of-town guests. Because the wedding was held in Texas, I went to the local Walmart and purchased various Texas theme post cards.

Postcards made from basic card stock are an inexpensive way to go.
You can get 4 from a standard 8 1/2 x 11 sheet. Postage is
less too.
Or you can email.

Our families (myself, my mother, my fiance, and my father & step-mother in law) contacted all of our out-of-town guests via phone to let them know the wedding date. We also gave them a heads up on rooms at the hotel where the actual ceremony & reception will be taking place, as well as the best way for getting to and from the airport (in the event that they are not renting cars for the weekend).
Good luck!
