I just finished making my own invitations and I must tell you that it is VERY time consuming. Unless this is really your thing I would not recommend it. If you do decide to go for it, don't get the wedding kits that you can find at Office Supply stores. You will get it home and realize that you need more of something or decide that you want outer envelopes which don't come in those kits. Also remember that your printer will eat a bunch of envelopes or you will put them in the wrong way or something. Get your supplies at Kelly Paper and any ribbons or stickers at the craft store.
The benefits of making your own invitations are that you can always make another one if you forget someone, or change your mind about wording during the process. We also customized our response cards to include the names of the people invited so that people wouldn't be able to add anything (like their kids!)
