I am looking for an inexpensive way to get handmade paper invites. It is a simple panel invitation with a vellum overlay tied with ribbon. I am not against doing everything myself if I can find the handmade paper. I have checked several websites, and prices are still much higher than I would like. Does anyone have any ideas? Has anybody else done this before? It seems like it would be easy, but I don't know if I am missing something. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you want to do it yourself you might try going to a local art supply store- one that sells to art students and professionals- and looking at the paper they sell by the sheet. Depending on how big you want the invites to be, you can probably get 5-10 invites out of a sheet, then buy the vellum in bulk, and a couple of rolls of ribbon. My fiance and I are trying to do the same thing. There are several catalogs that sell similar type invites but they tend to be pricey, and if you do it yourself you will have more choices of paper and you'll have more control over the price. We guestimated for 200 invites we'd probably spend 2-3 hundred with all the bells and whistles. You might even luck out and be able to buy a bunch of paper on sale. I would take it to a stationer and ask to have it cut to size for you; I know if I tried to do it the edges would probably be all crooked! And who knows, the art store might be able to help you find someone good locally to design them if you ask. Good luck!

I too am making my own invites. I'm extremely cheap and luckily have access to a few designers, so I thought this would be the best way to go.
After looking at a lot of very fancy paper, I finally decided that simpler was best for me. I wen to the Kelly Paper store near my home (there is a website too: www.kellypaper.com I think). I bought 80lb cardstock and 100lb cardstock and 29lb vellum. I ordered envelopes from www.envelopemall.com since I wanted vellum no 10 that were open ended (a bit of a specialty).
I got my idea from a fancy invite company that charged $7.50 each. I think my invites are about .22 each plus the cost of ribbon, and stamps. I'm making my "tea length" with a vellum overlay and an RSVP postcard.
It did take a while, but I'm happy with them...

Janki--Thanks for the tips! Envelope Mall has great prices. Can you speak to the quality of the paper stock? Also, how are you getting your invites printed? Thanks!

Another good source is Office Depot or Staples. They usually have reams of vellum for cheap (some cardstock selection but not the best).
I know of one place that offers quantity discounts on paper & maybe envelopes. It's the Paper Source . They also have neat ideas on their website for you to copy. They have stores in CA and in the east coast
Another great source of inspiration is Impress Rubber Stamps of WA state. The store owner even wrote a book about hand made cards with lovely examples. You can buy this book on Amazon.

We made our invitations. Plenty of work, but fun! Check out:

http://www.petalpaper.com/
You can either buy the paper in reams (250 pieces ~ $20/ream)
and design and cut them yourself, or buy sets, where the
paper is pre-cut and you just print (this is petalpaper.com)
We bought the paper and cut it ourselves, including all the enclosures.
You just need to find envelopes you like so you know how big
to make the invites. We bought all our stuff at paperzone.
Good luck,

Not sure what part of the country you are in but I found some great invitations at Garden Ridge in Fort Worth, TX
The paper looks like the hand-made type with the leaves and flowers pressed into it. The kit was $39 for 50 Invitations, envelopes, response cards, vellum and ribbon included.
