Hi, I'm not only plus size, but very short and disproportionately big busted. I can't imagine being able to find any dress that can be altered to fit my strange dimensions, so i'm looking for a dressmaker who can do a good job altering a pattern or making one herself. Any leads...?

I came across this post. I am probably much too late to be of any help. I too am 5'2", short waisted, average size leg person with two sizes larger in the bust. I can wear a 14 regular bottom, but need an XLarge Petite top. I chose a slight empire waisted dress. They order a straight size to fit the bust/top, and alter the top from the shoulder area. Pull up on the shoulders (bringing the whole gown into place for bust, waist & hips. Reset the sleeves (remove and shorten sleeve at shoulder to fit proportions better. Then the lower part had to be taken in 2 sizes but since it was what I would call "modified" empire, not right under the bust, but set almost to my waist. there is not a lot of form fitting for the lower part of the dress. (Though I have had more sheath type dresses altered to fit.) I went to a good reputable shop and trusted that they would only hire good seamstresses. It worked out great for me. Angel

Hi,

This is going back time.... but there is a GREAT dressmaker in King St Alexandria, VA. If you are coming from the metro, she will be on the left hand side. I do not know her name, but she altered a dress for my friend and makes dresses from scratch. Everything that you could want and resonable.

Just go for a walk along King St- up nearer to the metro (as apart from the waterfront)and you will see her. One more thing-she has a white storefront and usually a beautiful dress in the window.

I know of a great...great dressmaker located in Rockville. Her name is Lola Fowle. I went to 4 different shops and I felt the best about her. She does alterations and makes many dresses from scratch. Her pricing is beyond reasonable. I just can't brag about her enough. She did a rush job on my wedding dress that required rebeading the whole bodice and opening all the seams. I am large chested and she understood the importance of making the top fit securely. My bridesmaids and mom ended up going to her too.

I don't have her card with me but you can get the number from I do I do wedding gowns 301-762-4464 or email me at thomastl@hotmail.com and I will locate the number at home.
