View Full Version : Illustrations not matching the story

Title tells it all. Maybe I am too much of a perfectionist, and this is a petty b!tch, but than apparently DS has inherited this trait of mine. It used to bug me but I thought I was the only one. Now that DS talks non-stop, he corrects me when I say brick house when the house in the picture is made from stone. The list goes on and on. Would it kill illustrators to match pictures to the story? It's not like we are talking about anything difficult. If the little bear's plate is blue in the fairy tale (Three Bears) than why make it brown in the picture? G-r-r-r.

Don't worry, you are not the only one's. Both DH and I are like this, so I am sure DD will be the same way. Having attention to detail can be a curse sometimes. :-)

That would really annoy me too. The pictures should match the story- that's very confusing for begining readers.

Thanks for pointing it out, Erica. "Attention to detail" sounds much better that anything I came up with. And just venting here makes me care less about this mismatch, at least for now.

My point precisely. I am glad I am not the only one who is annoyed by this. And since I can't change the pictures, I am stuck correcting the story to match them whenever possible.

You should write to the publisher - that's something any good copyeditor or proofreader should be checking for as soon as the illustrations and text are put together.

My son's getting to an age where he's also noticing stuff like this and I'm struggling to come up with explanations. I'm also paranoid that one of these days he's going to catch on that our copy of Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed has a misprint, where two pages are repeated instead of the pages that are supposed to be there. Usually I just go along with the song at that point, and don't focus too much on those pages, but I'm sure he's going to realize something's wrong any day now.
Another gripe that I have is when the illustrations are wrong, incorrect or unreasonable. For example, I used to play various musical instruments including the flute, piccolo and fife, and it bugs me when illustrations show people playing them wrong or with the hands backwards. Especially on illustrations for supposedly educational items or videos. My son learns a lot from the books and videos, and I have a hard time explaining why the way they're doing something isn't the best way to do it.

OMG! This totally gets on my nerves! Everytime I see illustrations of people playing string instruments practically bass-ackwards it makes me crazy. Another thing I can't stand is when I get a catalog for string instruments and the kid in the picture is playing violin like he learned how to 5 minutes before the picture was taken. Bow hold completely wrong, instrument in the wrong position. It's pitiful.
