I have seen gate extensions for banisters, but I don't know if they'll work for what we need. We need one for the entrance to our living room, right next to the steps. One side has a banister, but there is the whole wooden base that sticks out further than the banister. I took a picture so it would make sense... Is there any solution for this? Thanks!!! :)

Is there anywhere else you can put a gate? Like somewhere that blocks off access to both the stairs and the living room? In our case, we didn't gate off the living room or bottom of the stairs because both would have been a royal pain, but instead put a gate in a hallway that effectively blocks off access to both spaces. It has worked great for us!!

Not really... on the other side of the stairs is the foyer / entrance area...which opens straight into the dining room. There is no divider wall - just 2 pillars. (And the dining room needs to be off-limits!) The only other option is to get one of those super long gates that blocks off the entire dining room opening - but then we'd still need a gate at the bottom of the steps (banister on both sides).
Seems like the simplest thing is to just do the one at the living room (then we won't have to go through a gate to go up the stairs).

I've seen that the "Center Gateway" gate has a banister extension. Does anyone know if you can just put that on the top, but leave the regular pressure-mounted end on the bottom? And can they be set at different lengths (top & bottom mounts)? In other words, would this gate work for us? ;)

Ok, I have one more reply to my own thread... ;) lol
I found another option & wondered what people think of this. The ideal would be to do what I'm originally asking...get a gate that fits in the actual entrance to the room. BUT... I've seen these large gates that are configurable. It looks like this would work to kind of avoid the actual room opening (put it a little further into the room).
I found the "Wide Spaces Swing Gate" on One Step Ahead. It looks like it does exactly what I'm thinking of! (again, this is still Plan B...and it's the wrong color of wood for our house :( ) Any experience with this one?

Thanks so much!!!! :)

We have the KidCo gates, (same as what they sell in the OSA catalog) and they do have some play in the spindle expansion gate.
Here is their website

Thanks so much for the help! Problem solved! :)
I just wanted to post, in case this may help others with a similar set-up. We did buy the KidCo Center Gateway gate. We needed one extension set & the banister set. Each pressure point can be adjusted individually, so it works great. You just have to be careful not to overtighten it on the banister! It did take my dh a very long time to get it set up & adjusted properly (he's an engineer & perfectionist ;) ). I'm posting a pic of the outcome...
Are there any for stretching across the stairs?
Jack has learned to climb, and I would love a gate we could put on the second or third stair (wall on one side, banister on the other).

I just came across this thread so I'm jumping in really late. I was going to suggest the KIdCo center gateway before I read your solution reply since we have pretty similar situation. We also have wooden banister on one side and wall on the other. It works perfect! We have the wooden one. Comes in 2 finishes (americana and the lighter beechwood). We just had to add the extension kit model G15, I think. I guess this is just an add-on comment.

Yup, the Center Gateway does work for that as well. Actual, I think that's its real intended purpose. ...which is why I wondered if it would work for our purpose.
But I think it did say to only use the banister attachment on one side. So I think you can't use it if you had a rail on both sides...but since one side of yours is a wall, it should work great. :)
