Dad, Mom, and Baby Love This Jogger!, September 7, 2005

Pros: Good fold, excellent tracking, rolls itself
Cons: Knobby, odd-sized tires

I bought the 2005 BOB SUS D'Lux for around $300 with shipping about 6 months ago; I think they had a free handlebar console deal, too. We later got the car seat adapter (ICSA) and the Warm Fuzzy accesories from "A Running Stroller".

Strolling and Running: We used it at first for walks predominantly, starting when DS was about 4weeks old. They recommend not using it (except with the ICSA) until 6-8 weeks, but DS seemed ready around 4 weeks with his head control (always has been a good tummy-timer). It reclines to about 45 degrees. The suspension is outstanding- the previous reviewer mentioned that it was hard to turn without lifting the front wheel- this is true if you're comparing it to swivel wheel strollers, but compared to other joggers this is the easiest to 'veer' side to side due to the suspension- I can easily make a 90 degree turn in at a street corner (in the street) with one hand pushing- on the side walk or with a sharper turn, you do have to lift the wheel. It pushes very easily- I run in the 8-9 minute mile range without using it and more like the 9-10 minute range with it- some of that is probably due to taking more time crossing streets/ talking to DS- if I wanted to go faster, I probably could. I've so far put in only about 10 miles running with it (DS is 5 months old- they recommend 6 months, but like every other kid out there, DS is 'advanced' beyond the ridiculously low standards that the liability departments recommend...) The suspension eats up the bumps really well. The Warm Fuzzy looks really comfy for DS; a Snuzzzler would probably work ok to for smaller kids, but the WF is big enough to leave on forever. We didn't use the ICSA much- I'd only recommend it if you plan to use this as your primary stroller or your only stroller. It worked really well, though, with our SnugRide.

Convenience: The fold makes this easy to store in most places- we keep it in a small front closet; it'll fit in my Honda Civic trunk in a pinch. Other joggers with cumbersome folds would probably live in the garage. It takes about 20 seconds to fold and about 10 to unfold. It's a few steps but they're easy. To keep it closed you need to wrap the tether around the pushbar- this is a little hassle if you're used to an umbrella fold, but it's as good as you'll get for a jogger. The wheels come on and off really easily- even the front one. Putting it together was easy. The canopy is excellent. The basket is large and easily accessible. The handlebar console is great- get it. Strapping DS in is easy and comfy- it has a five-point system with a chest strap and padded shoulder straps. I called their customer service once to ask a question before I bought the ICSA- I got to talk to a real person pretty quickly, and they answered my question well.

Downsides: Now that DS is old enough that I'm running on smooth roads with him, I wish I'd got the Ironman-- the D'Lux is easy enough to push, but I bet I'd fly with those Ironman slick tires! But when I do push it on sidewalks, I'm thankful for the soft knobbys. I've looked into other tires, and it seems that in the 16" by 2" size, only knobby tires are available. Oh well. The kid sits a little higher in this than other joggers. When I ran on a windy day, it seemed to get blown around a bit more than I'd expected. The handlebar height isn't adjustable. I'm 5'11" and it's fine for me and my 5'6" wife, but might be tough on really tall or short persons. It doesn't have a rear brake, but if you don't plan on leaving your child unattended on Lombard St in San Francisco, the front brake is fine. It's a little awkward to carry when folded, but not when compared to other joggers.

Overall, I'd give this a 9.5 out of 10. Some people might think for $300 you'd get an adjustable handlebar and a rear brake, and if you think you need these, you might need to look at another stroller. People using this only for running on smooth roads should probably get an Ironman or another brand with 16 or 20" wheels. If you plan to run and walk on a variety of surfaces, you're of average height, and you don't need a rear brake, this is the perfect jogging stroller.

Hope this helps! I don't work for B.O.B!

Mike

This stroller runs itself! Seriously!, June 13, 2005

Pros: Smooth ride, easy fold, well-built
Cons: Hard to turn on a curvy path

I love everything about this stroller. Make sure you purchase the optional drink/key console. When we are out running I barely notice that my son and the stroller are even there - it really does feel like it has a motor and is pushing itself. The basket is large, the handlebar is the right height, the seat is comfortable for my son, the canopy covers well, the fold is perfect. Would you believe I don't even work for BOB? The only negative thing I can think to mention is that on curvy trails it is hard to turn the BOB w/o lifting the front tire, but what do I expect with a stroller with a fixed front wheel?! My friends are envious of this stroller.
