A BIG disappointment, July 3, 2006

Pros: chair looks great, tray top is dishwasher safe
Cons: seat-too small, upright safety straps-bad design not safe

This is my first baby. I was so excited when I found a new wooden high chair. The chair looks great! I thought I would love it. Now that my six month old is eating solids, I decided to give this chair a test drive. I absolutely hate it and I'm so disappointed. Even though she can sit up very well on her own, my baby slumps over in this chair. I think it's because the seat back sits up very straight up. The other big problem with the seat is the fact that the safety harness is very poorly designed. It is a three point, rather than a 5 point harness and rides very low on the child's lap. It hits my baby around the top of her thighs, which doesn't provide much security or support. It's hard to secure the safety strap because of it's weird position when baby is in the seat.

Another problem that I see with this chair is the fact that it seems really small. At six months, my baby just about fills the chair. A friend used the chair this weekend to feed her 14 month old and lenthwise the chair was too small (her child is somewhat on the tall side, but not extraordinarily tall). Another friend tried the chair awhile back with her almost 2 year old and the chair was simply too small.

On the plus side, I do like the dishwasher safe tray top, but I must say the tray itself is difficult to slide on and off the chair.

I'm disappointed because I REALLY wanted to like this chair. In my opinion, it is simply unuseable. Because my child is so uncomfortable in it, she is really distracted and disinterested in eating when she is in the chair (which is the whole point of a high chair, isn't it?). Learn from my mistake and DO NOT buy this chair. My only consolation is it was a gift. If I had spent $100 on this chair, I would be even more disappointed.

Great high chair for what it is., November 28, 2007

Pros: Looks great! Very sturdy.
Cons: Very basic high chair...no bells and whistles.

I purchased the Eddie Bauer Wood High Chair from Babies 'R Us in August 2007. I paid about $150.

I'm very surprised by all the negative reviews of this high chair. I think it's a great high chair *for what it is*. No, it doesn't recline. It doesn't have a wipeable, vinyl seat pad. It doesn't have shoulder straps or wheels. It doesn't have a height-adjustment.

But the thing is, I knew all of that before I purchased the chair. And I bought it anyway. Why? Because we have a very small house. We don't have room to fold up and store a high chair, so it stays sitting at the dining room table. We have an open floor plan, so the dining room is in full view of the living room and kitchen. Because of this, I wanted a high chair that looked nice and didn't clash with my decor. The Eddie Bauer Wood High Chair fits the bill. It's much nicer to look at than any other high chairs I've seen. While it doesn't have all the features that some others come with, I was willing to sacrifice that for asthetics.

Because we didn't start my son on solids until he was 6 months old and could sit up well, I didn't miss the recline feature. There is no shoulder harness, only a waist belt, but the design of the chair, and the way the tray snaps in, makes me feel like my son is very safe in it. The seat pad is not made of vinyl, but it does seem to wipe off pretty easily and it's machine-washable if it gets too messy (we've been using it for almost three months and have only had to wash it once, and that was because of a diaper blowout, not a food mess). There is a dishwasher-safe snap-in tray insert, which is nice. There is a nice under-seat storage area, where I keep extra bibs and washcloths. The chair feels very sturdy (doesn't seem like it would tip easily). It doesn't have wheels, which makes it kind of difficult to move around, but that doesn't matter to me since we leave it set up in the dining room.

Overall, I think this is a very nice high chair if you understand its lack of features before you buy it. Some people may not be willing to sacrifice all the bells and whistles that other chairs come with for asthetics - I was, and I've been very happy with our purchase. If you're looking for a nice-looking high chair without the expensive price tage of a Kinderzeat or Trip Trapp, this may be the way to go.

Pros: Good looks, very sturdy
Cons: Hard to stuff an unwilling child into

I'm surprised by all the negative reviews of this chair, I like ours! It's good at being what it's intended to be: a solid, non-portable, nice-looking wooden chair for babies/toddlers old enough to sit up and eat with their families. I wanted something that could sit by the dinner table for several years without clashing with our other furniture; we all eat there every night, so portability is not an issue. We didn't put our baby in it until she was old enough to sit up, so the lack of recline was never an issue either. The seat cushion on the model from BRU is a vinyl-ish material that's easy to wipe clean, and can also be machine-washed; ours looks like new after about a year of daily use. (I have seen a Target model with a *cloth* seat, which seems like a terrible idea!) Cleaning between the wooden side slats can be a bit of a chore, but we only have to do this after occasional really messy meals. The only downside for us has been that the lap bar and antisubmarining crotch bar are one solid unit screwed permanently into the chair-- normally fine (and safer for the baby since nothing relies on a removable a tray to hold her in), but hard to stuff a child's feet through when she occasionally doesn't feel like getting in. Our 20-month-old is both tall and heavy for her age and fits comfortably in the seat with room to spare, and we're happy with the 3-point seatbelt. She occasionally tries to climb the chair, but it's sturdy and heavy enough that it hasn't budged. This clearly isn't the high chair for everyone, but it's been great for our family.

Beautiful chair, but not functional, September 13, 2005

Pros: Looks great, parent swing out trays keep food out of reach
Cons: Terrible non-adjustable harness

I love the looks of this chair and this being my first child thought that the big difference in highchairs was the way they looked. Recline, for what? I thought. Turns out that a recline would be really helpful for my daughter to take her own bottle while I fix her lunch. But still I could do without the recline, it's the non-adjustable harness that has me regretting my choice. I got the Manchester pattern and I've seen that they have new patterns and thought maybe they redesigned the utterly useless harness too. The front part that goes between the baby's legs does not ajdust at all and it's really really long. The sides that click into the center strap do adjust, but still leaves a big gap in front so it sits funny and doesn't strap baby in. I called Cosco to see if I was doing something wrong and was told the straps are meant to go across a child's lap, not waist. They would only say that the chair was functining in accordance with the design. I infomed the woman that my 8 month old slumped in the chair even with the harness on and once she gets a bit older, there is no way that harness would keep her from crawling out. (Obviously, I would make sure this doesn't happen, but not the point, the harness is useless!) Also, if weight and wheels are important factors for you, this is not the chair for you. It's heavy and there are no wheels, nor height adjustment. I still love the way it looks and love the little parent swing out tray to keep food away from baby. If they would fix the harness, I would give the chair a B+ , but since I think the harness is dangerous I have to give it a "D"

Great Highchair for an Apartment, May 15, 2006

Pros: Looks good, easy to clean, convenient tray
Cons: can not move it easily

I'm really happy with this high chair. We needed a smaller type because of limited space in our apartment. The other chairs seemed to have such wide bases. This one fits next to our dinning room table very well. The padding is adequate and the chair cleans very well. I just wipe the wood down with a wet washcloth after we're done feeding. There is no recline as the other reviews claim but that never seemed to bother us.
