Haven't used it yet, but..., July 7, 2006
Reviewer: pamD from Virginia

Pros: Very well constructed, nice style, rolling drawers
Cons: Poor stain job

We are still expecting our new arrival, but I thought I should point out a shortcoming of the VP furniture we bought. Although the construction seems very sturdy (including rolling drawer slides), we are less than impressed with the stain job. The furniture was obviously stained after assembly, and the underneath of some of the leg joints and other parts was not fully stained. In addition, one of the crib rails is a little rough, as if it were not sanded properly. It still looks great (if you aren't lying on the floor) and is well put together, but it is disappointing in quality furniture like this. (We paid $600 for the Nike crib, $750 for the four-drawer "Newport" dresser, $430 for the nightstand, and $480 for the 3-shelf bookcase).

Top quality construction & materials, January 20, 2006
Reviewer: Jennymarie from Connecticut

Pros: Well made
Cons: Painted furniture doesn't hold up to teething

We purchased a Vermont Precision crib in 2004. It was a floor model, so we got it for $600. Its painted white with beadboard trim. We thought it was a great price given the quality of construction.

The crib really is great. The drop down side rail is the smoothest of the high end brands we tested (Morigeau, etc.) I also felt that the construction is generally heavier and chunkier than many other high end brands.

That said, I would probably look for a wood finish crib next time around. My son started teething on the rail so we bought rail guards to protect the paint. Then he figured out how to remove the rail guard, and there's pretty much nothing we can do to prevent him from using his crib as a $600 teether. I was surprised, and disappointed, with how easily the paint came off. I'm not certain if all painted wood cribs would have this problem, or if there is some issue with the durability of the paint that VT Precision uses. A salesperson I spoke to at a kids furniture store advised us that the plastic/melamine type "paint" finishes on some of the cheaper "MDF" furniture are more durable than painted wood, and that wood construction with varnish is the best combination of finish durability and construction.

I figured I had to mention this problem, since after a year and a half of use the crib rail looks pretty destroyed.

I'm glad we didn't fork out money for the matching VT precision dresser. Everyone I know who has purchased high end nursery/kids room furniture has regretted the decision because kids just destroy their furniture.

All of our nursery furniture is Vermont Precision. I am so glad that we decided to go with this company. The crib is beautiful and really excellent quality. We bought the dresser, bookcase and changing table. All of which are beautiful and excellent craftsmanship. The wood is spectacular. Our crib is the Cherry and Maple combination and I love the way the woods contrast and complement each other. I think we paid about $1200 for the crib and $1500 for the dresser, which is more then most nursery furniture but our intent was for our son to have this furniture for his lifetime and to use his crib for his children. The craftsmanship of this furniture will provide an exceptionally long life for all of the furniture we ordered.
