Charleston crib. Cognac finish. Within 12 months product finish began to bubble, peel. Severely disappointed. Was expensive family gift. This product should be recalled. This is hazardous to children.

Dressers not worth the money!, November 7, 2007

Cons: Cherry "stain" chips.

I have two pieces of the Newport line in cherry- the crib and combo dresser. I purchased Munire Furniture based on the Baby Bargains recommendation. First, let me say that I am very happy with the crib. It is well made and beautifully designed. However, the dresser really makes me wonder what Denise and Alan were thinking! I’ve had this furniture since June. Almost immediate, the cherry “stain on the dresser began chipping at the edge. My husband and I have to be extra careful when changing our daughter, because we’re afraid if we touch the edge of the dresser, the stain will peel of even further. The drawers are shaky and just don’t feel well made at all. I planned on adding the hutch to our nursery when our daughter was 6 months old – but now that she is, I am hesitating. Do I really want to pay an additional $400 for furniture that may disappoint me again!? In the meantime, I am stuck searching for shelves that will match. I am frustrated and kicking myself for spending the money on this dresser! If I could do it again, I'd go with Natart or Stanley.

The finish has much to be desired, October 24, 2007
Reviewer: newfirsttimemom from East Brunswick, NJ

Pros: very nice looking piece of furniture
Cons: the finish can not take ANY stress at all.

Being a first time parents we decided to go with a more pricey crib thinking you get what you pay for. The crib itself is a gorgeous piece of furniture, but not at all finished to take the abuse of a child. This finish is of very poor quality. I feel that I have scratched it by leaning over the crib with my buttons on my shirt while getting the baby out. Also the instructions on how to lower the crib need to be redone. For the price you would expect more then a few sheets of poorly copied pictures for instructions. I feel disappointed in our choice.

Looks great, but go for something that has a better reputation on the finish. I can't imagine what it will look like once my little one starts playing in her room. I am totally disappointed and am searching this site for the next crib I buy for baby #2 on it's way.

It's interesting that we just purchased the same crib as the previous reviewer (Essex in Chestnut) and found no problems with it. In fact, we both think it's one of the nicest pieces of furniture we own! Solid construction, finish is even, and the price can't be beat. We comparison shopped at several "Big Box" stores, and their offerings for a similar price seemed shabby and flimsy. Yes, the wood has some small holes (like the size of pinholes) in certain areas, but this is the kind of wood, not a manufacturing defect. We also had excellent interactions with customer service--prompt and friendly--regardless of whether I called or emailed them with questions. Delivery was also quite speedy. We received our crib in 4 weeks.
