Great choice for budget-conscious parents, August 26, 2007

Pros: Easy assembly, inexpensive, quality construction
Cons: No drop side, made of MDF

We bought the IKEA SNIGLAR crib in 2004 when we were expecting our second child. Our first child slept great in his crib and was not yet ready to move to a twin-sized bed, so we spent $89 on the SNIGLAR to keep him sleeping and happy.

It was money well-spent. The SNIGLAR was easy to assemble, disassemble and convert into a toddler-bed configuration over its first year of use. We are now using the SNIGLAR for our third child and it went together well and looks great even after being in storage for 18 months.

Because it lacks a lot of embellishment, the SNIGLAR has a smaller footprint than our fancy Italian crib. It is also lower to the ground, enabling shorter parents to comfortably lower and retrieve children from the crib mattress even without a drop side (and when your child inevitably reaches the climbing-out stage of development, s/he's got a shorter drop to the floor). The mattress has two height settings, although we've found that the higher mattress setting has such a limited lifespan that we have never bothered to use it. The crib converts to a toddler bed by removing the side rails and/or upper head and foot panels. We have also had luck doing an "IKEA mod" and removing only the front rail; the crib remained sturdy and stable with this small modification.

The head and foot board panels are made of MDF, but the side rails are solid wood. The mattress support is a solid piece of MDF with circular cut-outs on the bottom to allow the mattress to breathe. It is supported by wood rails that connect to the head and foot board panels. The design of the crib allows for a crib bumper, but it is difficult to use a crib skirt with this model.

The crib fits a standard crib mattress - we have used both a Sealy spring mattress and a foam mattress also from IKEA.

You can easily fit three low SLUGIS bins underneath the crib to store extra crib linens or clothing.

Pros: Low price, wood construction, easy assembly
Cons: Not much that we can tell!

My husband and I are trying to do a nursery on a budget and went to Ikea after reading the good review it received in Baby Bargains. I immediately fell in love with the Leksvik 2 drawer dresser/changing table and the toy box. We decided against the crib because of its small/short size. After inspecting it in the store we were pleased to see it was made of solid wood (with exception of the bottom of the drawers and the back of the toybox/dresser). It was exactly what we wanted/needed at the price we could afford.

Upon getting our new pieces home, we dove right into the construction process. The photo directions are easy to understand and in an hour we had two new pieces of furniture that look great in our nursery! A bonus feature: the toybox has a spring loaded top that only closes when pressure is applied (it won't slam down on its own) so it is safer for little fingers!!

IKEA Leksvik crib and dresser, November 23, 2007

Overall Grade   10.00/10  (10)

Pros: Fairly easy set up, no problems with parts, simple design
Cons: Sometimes instructions leave you scratching your head

We bought the Leksvik crib and a Leksvik 4 drawer dresser. We have many other items in our home from IKEA and have always been satisfied with their quality. The Leksvik crib was $149. The instructions were fairly clear - there were a couple times my husband and I had to debate about what they were actually trying to say, but by the end the crib was together correctly. It's a simple design, but it works for us.

We also bought a Leksvik 4 drawer dresser for $129 which we will use as a changing table. Also a great bargain. It took longer to set up than the crib, but for the price, it is good quality compared to other dressers that we saw at other stores listed for $200 - $400. The bottoms of the drawers are a step up from most cheap dressers - they aren't wood, but they aren't that weak cardboard either.

I would say if you don't mind the simple design and have an eye for detail when you are putting things together, the crib and dresser from IKEA are WELL worth it.

Large Gap on Leksvik crib!, April 27, 2009

Pros: cheap price, good for small spaces
Cons: dangerous and cheap quality wood used

We have a very small room for our nursery so we thought the Leksvik collection would be perfect, especially after reading great reviews of IKEA and looking at the price! We bought the crib, dresser w/changing table attachment and armoire. Got them home, put the crib together and the wood that holds the slats along the bottom split and broke off as we were inserting the pins that hold the slats in place. . . no big deal, a little wood glue and it is fixed. As we were unpacking the armoire to set up, the wood for the side panel just split down the middle - kind of a bigger deal and now maybe a sign of quality. Finished crib and put the mattress in - there is a 1 1/2 in gap between the mattress and the side of the crib, after envisioning a trapped baby we returned it all and started over. Sounded too good to be true and it was for us. Have a picture of gap but not sure how to post it. . . . should be recalled IMO.

gap on Leksvik crib is dangerous, June 27, 2008

Pros: good price; matching pieces are sturdy
Cons: GAP

Our Leksvik crib, when properly assembled, has an approximate 1" gap on both of the long sides between the mattress frame and the vertical slats. This is dangerous! (If you check out the messsage boards, others have the same problem.) IKEA recommends a crib bumper in there, but we're following the SIDS Foundation recommendation of no bumper pads.

We have the matching changing table and armoire. We really like them, especially for the price. It's worth noting that the handles on the armoire doors do not line up, though. The changing table will convert back to a regular dresser, which is nice. The changing table is also a nice height so the parent is not excessively bent over all the time.

We paid $149 for the crib, $149 for the changing table, and $199 for the armoire (wardrobe).

If you don't live near an IKEA, you won't be able to get these reasonably. I looked into the shipping charge on additional pieces, and the charges were MORE than the pieces themselves. We had relatives purchase our changing table at the store and ship it to us instead.
