Pros:
Crib and Combo unit are both sturdy, beautiful and well-made
Cons:
Crib may be difficult to put together
|
|
I have the Legacy Crib 29011 in Pecan and love it! I paid $350 for it (not including delivery and set-up, which was an additional $50). I also have the Bergen County Combo-Dresser in Pecan and love it, too! I paid $580 for the combo unit. Aesthetically, the crib and combo unit are beautiful. On a more practical level, the combo unit has dovetailed construction and drawer glides. The crib is sturdy and the drop-side is really quiet. It has metal spring supports for the mattress. It converts to a toddler bed if you buy the conversion kit. Am very pleased with both purchases.

Pros:
Responsive customer service
Cons:
Assembly requires patience
|
|
I recently purchased a $250 Legacy changing table. While assembling the item and attempting to tighten the screws to make two parts flush, the table cracked. I called customer service on 1/3/07 and inquired about purchasing replacement parts. Since the product was not damaged when I brought it home, I figured it was my responsibility to pay for the parts. However, the customer service rep could not have been nicer or more understanding. She recorded the model number and the specific parts that needed replacement. I received the parts via UPS within 4 business days and I didn't pay a penny.

It's difficult for me to review this furniture because there is so much I love about it, but a couple things that turned me off.First, I fell in love with their Legacy Devonshire series, which is now discontinued. Around the time it was discontinued, I contacted the Child Craft customer service by email. The first response was that it was NOT discontinued like stores were saying. Well, after two weeks of emails back and forth I finally got the straight answer that they were still making the crib (Devonshire Legacy Crib 37301), but the case pieces were discontinued. Then they proceeded to rub salt in the wound by telling me that they had just sold the last of the inventory less then a week ago. It appears based on that statement that if they had just given me the real answer when I had first contacted them, I could have actually gotten the remaining inventory.Luckily, I contacted Baby Boudoir Outlet, an outlet listed in Baby Bargains, and had a wonderful experience. They had the pieces I wanted, and Jim Vieira worked with me extensively and was able to get all the pieces shipped to Salt Lake City at a reasonable shipping cost. If you are looking to get any of the brands they carry shipped (and they do carry others besides Legacy), I would highly recommend sending an email and seeing what they can do. (you can find their info in Baby Bargains like I did). Because the line was discontinued, I purchased more pieces then I probably would have of anything else, so I ended up spending quite a bit of money just to make sure that down the road I didn't regret not getting something. For a dressing bureau, bureau hutch, large 4-drawer chest and crib, which were shipped from Massachusetts to Utah, the total furniture and shipping came to around $2400, so not outrageous for everything I got, but definitely not "thrifty". That price was also with Jim offering a little discount. As far as the furniture, it is absolutely gorgeous. The styling is beautiful, and construction is really solid. Jim even included a small jar of stain, so as the years go by we can touch up those child dings. The pieces are so beautiful that they would fit right in an adult's room. There were just a couple gripes. First, Legacy doesn't appear to be super consistent with their dye lots. Because I bought from an outlet, all the pieces were manufactured at a different time and you could tell without even having to look at the manufactured dates on the back. None of the differences were huge, but each piece was slightly different. This won't be a big deal when the pieces are postioned a little ways apart, it just seemed strange that with four pieces none of them were identical, even though they were from the same manufacturer. I'm thinking though that if you were to order something brand-new and non-discontinued, they would probably have been made at the same time, and this would not be an issue at all.The other issue, which truly is the reason for the lower grade in spite of the fact I love the furniture, is their false advertising. I have a 2005 and a 2006 catalog from Legacy. In BOTH catalogs, it clearly states things like "solid wood construction" and "The Devonshire collection pieces are made of solid hardwood". Although the pieces are made of mostly Alder, so they do use a hardwood, the crib is the only piece that did not say "utilizes selected hardwood and veneers" on the consumer tag on the back. It doesn't seem like you would use veneers on your furniture that is advertised as solid. What's even stranger is that their other lines say when they contain veneers, so they had gone out of their way to play up the solid hardwood on the Devonshire collection. And in all honesty, most of each piece is solid Alder, but they have admitted in black and white on the consumer tag that their ads were fraudulent and that really bugs me. I would have still bought the furniture if they had said something like "Almost completely solid wood" or pointed out that the shelves in the dressing bureau would be veneer, or the backs would be veneer, etc or something like that. In fact, carrying the furniture up the stairs could have been a huge challenge if everything was solid hardwood, so we're probably better off. It just seemed dishonest the way they advertised, and that makes me seriously question their integrity overall. The final note is that the crib is solid hardwood as advertised. To purchase the crib alone would have been $499, and that price seemed pretty consistent among different retailers. I highly recommend the crib if you are looking for something modern, sleek and sturdy.

Pros:
Solid, price
Cons:
color choice
|
|
I got the Bergen county crib from a local store here and have been pleased with it since the day I got it. It actually only took me 2 weeks to get the crib and not the 4-6 weeks I was told but I did have a friend that her crib took 4 weeks. It almost seems like it took longer to put it together than it did to receive it. (what cribs are easy to put together?) Seriously it wasn't bad to put together. For a solid wood crib there is nothing out there that can match its quality or price. The only thing I wish is that some of their cribs had more color choices.

Pros:
price - but your time is worth more.
Cons:
cheap parts, cannot be assembled properly

Based on the solid reviews in Baby Bargains and elsewhere, we were confident that the Child Craft crib (model #10171) would be a reasonable compromise between price and quality. We ordered it from Target, on-line, paying $200 and another $20 for shipping. When it arrived, the box seemed intact, but several problems became obvious quickly. First, the mattress spring had a bent leg which we had to hammer back into alignment. Second, one of the four spring brackets (the brackets that holds the mattress spring) wasn't machined, so it was impossible to install the screws that connect the mattress spring to the bracket and therefore the frame. Third, the dropside does not have right angles - this means that it's almost impossible to align the dropside in the frame. And even when we managed to align it in the guides, it's completely impossible to lock and unlock the dropside. (And in our defense, my husband and I have successfully assembled 20+ pieces of furniture, so the problem is not with our comprehension of the instructions.) The wood is very soft. We will simply return this to Target rather than trying to work out the issues with child craft as even if they correct defects in the parts, the crib itself is too flimsy to trust.
