Pros:
Price, crash test ratings
Cons:
cleaning fabric, base design, hard to adjust harness
|
|
We bought this convertible carseat when our son started to outgrow his Snugride infant seat. We use it primarily in our 2004 Subaru Forester, which is a small SUV. We bought it because Consumer Reports magazine listed it as a "Best Buy".If you can find it, at $70 the price is right for this carseat. If you must pay shipping and handling, the total cost is a bit more, but it is still much less than most other convertible carseats. Also, Consumer Reports gave it good reviews for their crash test. Overall, we are happy with our purchase. The first drawback we noticed is that the seat cover is difficult to clean. The label says that the fabric cover must be air dried, which is hardly practical considering that this is an item used by children. Once we installed it in our car, we noticed that the molded plastic on the base covered the other seatbelts in the backseat. This made it difficult for me to sit in the backseat with our son on long trips since I couldn't easily reach the seatbelt to buckle myself in. The third trouble spot we noticed is that the harness is very difficult to adjust. Tightening the straps is easy enough, but the design requires tugging on a very tight shorter strap while pulling on the harness to loosen. While these drawbacks might make some parents reconsider purchasing this product, for those of us on a budget the Titan 5 is a safe choice for the money.

Pros:
Easy installation, cup holder, quality for the price
Cons:
"Trick" to tightening straps
|
|
I bought this carseat to have at my mom's house for when we visit and chose it based on the solid reviews and good price. Bought the Titan Deluxe for $90 at albeebaby.com with free s/h. It was a great choice! I moved it easily between 3 different cars on my last visit (VW Golf, Accord, & Jaguar) and got a very tight fit in all 3 with the LATCH installation. The cup holder is a great feature that I wish my Britax had - my 18-month-old actually used the holder and it saved me from having to grope around the back seat for my son's sippy cup while driving. The padding was surprisingly good and my son seemed very comfortable. The ONLY drawback I can think of is that I had a lot of trouble getting the harness tightened until I figured out the "trick" - you must pull DOWNWARD on the strap, otherwise the harness won't tighten. I'd never had this issue with my Graco infant seat or Britax and it was very frustrating until I figured it out. I can see why it would be next to impossible to use this car seat rear-facing because of this issue. The harness also has an unusual feature in that it is one long piece rather than 2 pieces - so the harness can get "off center." Again, this is easy to resolve once you understand how the harness is constructed. All in all, I was VERY happy with this car seat and found it comparable to the Britax we have at home, with the extra bonus of the cup holder which I think is a very worthwhile feature. The one drawback has to do with the harness and tightening it, but this is not an issue once you know the "trick" and as long as you use the seat rearfacing. I would definitely purchase this seat again if I had it to do over.
