Best monitor I've found!, November 28, 2007

Pros: Great reception, very little interference.
Cons: Works almost TOO well - can be very loud!

I purchased the Sony BabyCall Monitor in February of 2007, before the birth of my first child. I bought it at Toys 'R Us for $50. My son is now 8 months old, and we've gotten a lot of use out of this monitor.

I bought it based on the recommendations here and on the Baby Bargains message board, and I've been very pleased. The monitor gets great reception, it has very little interference, and it seems to have a good range and good battery life. I like that it has an out-of-range indicator - that was important to me as I sometimes walk the dog around our backyard while my son is napping in his crib.

My only complaint is that the monitor almost works TOO well...the lowest volume setting is still quite loud. Not a problem during the day, when I'm busy working around the house while my son naps, but at night it can be quite alarming to be woken up by a screaming baby blaring out of the monitor right beside the bed. But I suppose it's better to have it too loud than too quiet.

Too much static, disappointing range, May 9, 2009

Pros: rechargable battery
Cons: static (unless all other wireless devices are turned off)

I don't love our Sony BabyCall - here's why: (1) a lot of static unless we turn off our Blackberries and wireless internet (2) the receiver is bulky and kind of a pain to drag everywhere when doing chores, etc while baby sleeps and (3) I only get reception in the house not in the back yard. I do like the rechargable battery and when we do not have static the sound is loud and clear.

Disappointing range, static problems in old house, September 6, 2007

Pros: Inexpensive, rechargeable batteries
Cons: Unexplainable static, very limited range within house

Due to the review in Baby Bargains, we purchased this monitor. We live in a 100-year old townhome in an urban setting and hoped that the 900 MHz frequency monitor would protect our privacy and also avoid static, clicking etc. We have cordless phones and also a wireless Internet router in our home which we knew would also be "challenges" with a baby monitor. However, what we did NOT expect was the very disappointing range we got with this monitor. Perhaps because our house is older with more plaster walls (a guess on my part), we were out of range when we took this monitor downstairs and into our kitchen (a distance of about 70 feet) while our son slept upstairs! Forget about taking it outside, which we had hoped to be able to do. We also found that static and clicking was a problem and the monitor did not get along with our cordless phone--both the monitor and phone were fuzzy when the phone was in use. We ended up purchasing the Philips DECT digital baby monitor on the recommendation of a neighbor who'd had a similar experience with the Sony Baby Call. The Philips offers an excellent range of over 200 feet and we have heard no static, clicking, etc. It has other bells and whistles that are nice but unnecessary (it plays lullabies, has a night light, and has different microphone sensitivity settings). It is definitely more expensive, but avoiding the frustration we experienced with the Baby Call is worth it. What good is a monitor that doesn't let you travel out of earshot of your child?

Pros: great reception
Cons: too loud sometimes

I bought this item after reading its reviews in the baby bargains book. We love the sony monitor - it has great reception, rechargable batteries that last forever, convenient to carry around and little interference (our house is quite wired and still it works great).

I would definately recommend this item and the price is very reasonable.

Pros: Voice activated feature is great, rechargeable battery
Cons: Will make clicking noises randomly

We really like this baby monitor. The voice activated feature is great. It tunes out all background noise and allows you to just hear when baby is crying. We have a fish tank in the nursery, so otherwise we would hear that running constantly. The light up feature is also very good. Depending on how high the volume is turned up, it can be difficult to know how loud baby is actually crying. It was very helpful when she would just mildly fuss before falling back asleep, so that we didn't disturb her and have to get her back to sleep all over again. The rechargeable battery has a very long life (up to a couple of days without recharging).

The only negative is that it will click at random times and occasionally beep. Changing channels hasn't seemed to help that problem. So far, it hasn't affected our usage of the monitor.
