"Latest Consumer Reports rankings on car seats"

My copy of the new (May 2003) issue of Consumer Reports arrived yesterday with new ratings for car seats. I expect it will be available free on their website within the next couple weeks or so as their old report is currently available free, but for those of you in the market for a new seat, here are their top picks.

INFANT:
Graco Snugride (they mention the recall in the review)
Peg Perego Primo Viaggio

CONVERTIBLE:
Britax Roundabout
Evenflo Titan 5
Evenflo Triumph 5

TODDLER/BOOSTER:
Cosco Summit High Back Booster

BOOSTER:
Evenflo Right Fit
Graco TurboBooster
Britax Star Riser Comfy

As always, take recommendations with a grain of salt unless you know the technical background of the reviewer, and EXACTLY how their ratings are derived. Also:

The new review is good, but it shouldn't be the only resource you use for your car seat purchase.

What do you think of their results that seemed to show, for 7 models, better crash performance for a belted installation than a LATCHed installation? The Snugride was one of those -- it got a "better than average" score when installed with LATCH, but a "much better than average" score when installed with belts.

Quite surprising. I wonder if this was influenced by how they performed their test (obviously they should really explain their test procedure). NHTSA always says that a properly installed belted seat is as safe as a properly installed LATCHed seat.

There are obviously some dangerous implications to CR's results. Even if it is true that some seats perform better in crashes with belts than with LATCH, the probability of installation errors increases with belts.

I have no doubt that many combinations of LATCH carseats/vehicles will not install or test as well as using the belts. A recent IIHS paper on LATCH compatibility found the same. Overall, they determined LATCH was easier and resulted in a better fit, but there were many exceptions.

The problem is that we don't know the expertise of the testers for installation, their criteria for fit or the real difference between "better than average" or "much better than average". Given the same carseats and vehicles tested by another entity, I suspect the results could easily vary by a category.

The LATCH LOC results are a case in point. The ease of installation and quality of fit with this model is excellent in many vehicles. Unfortunately, rigid LATCH does not work at all in some vehicles with difficult anchor locations. Based on the CR comments, many parents probably won't even try that model even though it could well be easier and safer in their vehicle.

The NHTSA is developing its own ratings system. It will be interesting to see how that evolves. Manufacturers are already updating seats to get higher ratings. Many are improving manuals with more photos and diagrams, and Dorel (Cosco, Safety1st, Eddie Bauer) will soon include an easy to use tether adjuster on all their models. That was one complaint CR had in this review that will soon be fixed.
