I splurged on the crib mattress because of SIDS fear. I did lots of research and finally decided on the top-ranked Colgate Classica I mattress. I found it online at The Baby Club of America and paid $79.99. For the first few months, baby slept in the "Safe and Secure Sleeper" (by First Years) which we placed either in the Pack N Play in our room or in his crib. By 2 months, he outgrew this so it was time for him to sleep on the expensive Colgate crib mattress. For two weeks, he was up every hour (sometimes twice an hour) crying. Finally, thinking maybe he hated the mattress, I bought a Sealy at Wal-Mart. That same night, he slept great. I can't say for sure whether it was coincidence or he HATED the Colgate mattress but ever since we switched mattresses he sleeps great. I bought one expensive mattress for NOTHING! That goes to show reviews are not everything and every baby is different. Let your baby decide what's top-rated and try to buy it someone where you can return it if your baby hates it.
