Like a lot of new homeowners, we've had fun furnishing our house with mid-century modern couches, coffee tables, dining sets, etc. So when it came to outfitting our nursery, I thought we'd be able to find a simple-looking (read: no sleigh beds, please!) crib to match our aesthetic. After an extensive Web search, the only modern-looking cribs I could find started at $800 and went up from there. I spent a couple of months trying to justify to myself this expenditure, but I just couldn't do it. Eventually, I had to start over and find something I could live with. I settled on the Denise from Pali. At $289, it seemed like a real bargain after looking at that $800 number. I'm glad I did, too, because I have grown to really love it.I put the crib 75% together by myself--while 8 months pregnant. I needed help by the end when it all got connected, but I was pleased that I had been able to unpack the parts and get it nearly assembled without having to call in backup. The instructions were clear, simple, and easy to follow.I roll the whole crib out from the wall every couple of days (or more frequently, depending on my daughter's spitty-up habits) to change the sheet protector that's tied to the side rails. I like how sturdy the crib feels when I'm moving it, even across carpet, where the wheels have to make it out of their dents first.Aesthetically, I really like it. I like the feel of the smooth wood, and it matches nicely with the other furniture in the room, none of which was new. It's got a nice drawer under the bed where I keep the sheets, mattress pads, and a few other nursery items. Extra storage is always a plus in my small house. I have to use a dust ruffle for now since the mattress is in the higher position and otherwise, the items in the drawer would be exposed and on display for all the world to see. But I guess that's what dust ruffles are for (besides looking pretty).I love how smoothly the side rail drops. My only complaint is how loudly it clicks into place when I bring it up. It's always a gamble whether my daughter will startle awake when this happens. My husband has found a way to return it silently (by keeping pressure on the side with his knee, as if he were releasing it to drop), but now I'm so used to the click that I worry that it hasn't caught if I don't hear the noise!I bought the straight rail for converting the crib to a toddler bed. Who knows if we'll end up using it, but at $79 it was worth it just in case. I'd hate to try to find it, and in a matching color, later if we need it.
