Exclusive: BRU pulls 100,000 Jardine cribs for defective slats

(BOUDLER, CO) Babies R Us, the country�s largest baby store chain, has pulled 100,000 Jardine cribs from the shelves after receiving reports of defective slats.

In an email to BABY BARGAINS over the weekend, Babies R Us spokes person Kathleen Waugh said:

�We've received some quality assurance complaints about broken slats on some Jardine cribs. While we investigate this with the manufacturer, we have stopped selling all Jardine cribs, as a standard precautionary measure. We have many alternative crib models in our stores. There has not been a recall, but if customers experience a problem with slats on cribs they own, or have other questions, they should contact one of our stores for assistance.�

On May 21, we received the first reports from readers about the cribs disappearing from Babies R Us, which has 260 stores nationwide. BRU tells us they were notified by Jardine and the CPSC about concerns with certain styles of Jardine cribs. The problem: cribs with faulty slats that could fall out, endangering any child inside the crib.

It is unclear at this point how many reports of faulty slats there were; BRU says there have been no injuries. And not all the Jardine cribs are affected (we don't know which ones at this point). But given the serious nature of the potential problem, BRU pulled ALL the Jardine cribs off the shelves---the chain says this is a standard procedure when a potential safety concern is raised.

At this point, it appears that the CPSC and Jardine will take some kind of action on this this week---it could be a recall, but no decision has been made.

Jardine is one of BRU's biggest crib brands---they represent 20% to 25% of the cribs on the floor. With 260 stores selling the brand (which is a BRU exclusive made by Dorel Asia, a subsidiary of Dorel, which also owns Cosco), you can see how this recall could potentially affect hundreds of thousands of cribs. We estimate the total number of cribs pulled from BRU stores and warehouses is about 100,000, but that is only a rough guess. BRU didn�t have a complete count as of press time.

BRU has admitted that they could have handled the communication on this better---they did send out notices to parents who have these cribs on their registries. And stores were informed about the situation. But judging from the comments on our blog, not all BRU store employees got the memo, and this has created much confusion. We urge BRU and Jardine to establish a web site to address this situation.

Pending official word on this, we would urge parents take the following steps:

� If you have a Jardine crib, stop using it. Check the crib carefully for any loose slats---especially on the drop side. If you find a problem, stop using the crib immediately. File a report with the CPSC (cpsc.gov).

� If you have a Jardine crib and it appears to be fine, continue to monitor our blog ( http://baby411.typepad.com/babybargains/ ) and news reports for the latest news---again, not all Jardine styles will be affected by a potential recall. If you want to err on the side of caution (and we totally understand), put your child in a safe alternative sleeping space (newborns can sleep in a bassinet, older babies in a Graco Pack N Play, for example) until this matter is resolved.

� If you have a crib on order from Jardine, keep watching our blog and the news. If there is a recall, BRU will be providing refunds, etc. Of course, if your baby is due next month and your crib is now recalled, you have a problem---start thinking about a Plan B crib from another brand or store.

3. Evenflo recalls Discovery infant car seats

Evenflo Announces Voluntary Safety Recall of Discovery Infant Car Seat and Provides Supplemental Fastener to Enhance Safety Performance

VANDALIA, Ohio - February 1, 2008 - Evenflo today announced it is implementing a voluntary safety recall of its Discovery Infant Car Seat Models 390, 391, 534, 552. Approximately one million units were produced beginning April 2005.

This is based on recent laboratory tests conducted by Evenflo and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which show that this car seat could potentially become separated from its base in high impact side collisions similar to those in the tests. As a precautionary measure, Evenflo is providing current owners of these models with a free supplemental dual-hook fastener that has proven to keep the seat attached to the base in the event of such collisions. Additionally, Evenflo is taking steps to develop future models of Discovery with enhanced safety performance. These new Discovery models will be available to consumers starting in the second quarter, 2008.   

�We are parents, too, and protecting children is our core mission at Evenflo. While our current Discovery car seat models have performed well to protect infants in actual side impact automobile collisions without any reports of serious injury or death since they were introduced, we want to take further steps to protect the safety of children who use our products,� said Rob Matteucci, CEO of Evenflo. �These lab tests do show there is potential for the base to detach from the seat in high impact side collisions, so we are recommending that all Discovery owners use the supplemental dual-hook fastener, available free from Evenflo.�

Baby Bargains book withdraws recommendation for certain plastic baby bottles

(BOULDER, CO) The authors of BABY BARGAINS, the country�s best-selling guide to baby products (700,000 copies in print), today called for parents to stop using baby bottles and sippy cups made of polycarbonate plastic.

Polycarbonate bottles are made from a chemical called bisphenol A (BPA). In an article in a peer-reviewed medical journal last week, a group of 38 scientists said BPA caused a significant health risk.

Also last week, a federal panel convened by the National Institutes of Health said there is �some concern� the chemical could cause behavioral and neurological problems in young children.

Specifically, parents should stop using Avent�s Natural Feeding Bottle and Dr. Brown�s Natural Flow (or any bottle made of polycarbonate plastic)---these products were previously recommended by BABY BARGAINS.

�All baby bottles and sippy cups made of polycarbonate plastic should be avoided,� said author and consumer advocate Denise Fields. �If you are shopping for bottles, chose an alternative made from BPA-free plastic or glass. If you have polycarbonate bottles, throw them out.�

So, what is BPA? How is it harmful? See the FAQ below for answers.

Q. What the heck is BPA? Why is it dangerous?

Clear plastic baby bottles (as well as some food containers and water bottles) are made of polycarbonate, which contains a chemical called bisphenol A (BPA). It is the BPA that makes the hard, clear plastic bottles . . . well, hard and clear.

Here�s the rub: BPA�s chemical bond with polycarbonate breaks down over time�especially with repeated washings or heating of the bottle. As a result, BPA leaches out of the plastic bottle or sippy cup . . . and into the liquid (that is, breast milk or formula).

While most data on BPA comes from animal research, studies show even low-levels of BPA MAY be linked to everything from early puberty to breast cancer, to attention and developmental problems.

Q. Do we really know that these bottles are dangerous to humans?

No, we don�t. There have been no human studies on BPA�so far, researchers have only found problems in animal research.

There is a split opinion here among scientists. The same federal panel that said it had �some concern� about behavioral and developmental problems in babies also stated that links to other ailments like birth defects and adult ailments were �negligible.� Of course, the plastics industry says BPA is completely safe.

That contrasts to the group of 38 scientists who last week called the health threat from BPA as �significant.�

But the fact the federal panel said there were �some concerns� for the health of babies tipped the balance for us.

As parents, we realize it can be hard to decide what to do when the debate is so heated. As always, our mantra is �show us the science.� We believe enough science is now in to recommend a change in course.

Q. Isn�t it a bit alarmist to say stop using these bottles? When will we know for certain BPA is harmful to humans?

The truth is we won�t know for YEARS if there is a human health problem from BPA. And it could be YEARS more before the government decides to take some regulatory action.

We have consulted with pediatricians and other experts before making this decision. The consensus of these experts is: if concerns exist today (and that is backed up by reputable scientific research), then why not limit your baby�s exposure to this chemical?

Babies are especially at risk when it comes to exposure to harmful chemicals�that�s one thing we all can agree on.

The bottom line: we suggest stop using polycarbonate baby bottles and sippy cups NOW. Since there are quite a few BPA-free bottles on the market (see below), we believe this is an easy call for parents.

Q. The Juvenile Products Manufacturer�s Association said plastic baby bottles are safe.

In a recent statement, the JPMA said the federal panel�s report on BPA �reaffirms the safety of plastic baby bottles.�

With all due respect to the fine folks at the JPMA, we�re not sure they were reading the same report we did. If they did, they would note this sentence: �The Expert Panel expressed SOME CONCERN that exposure to BPA causes neural and behavioral effects (emphasis added).�

What part of �some concern� did the JPMA miss?

We realize you can argue that the panel didn�t call for the ban of products with BPA. But, that�s NOT what the panel was asked to do. It will now take years of debate among scientists, researchers and politicians as to the best course to take with BPA.

The JPMA does a good job at representing the manufacturers of baby products and lobbying the government on their behalf. But we would hardly call them unbiased experts on this subject. In fact, Avent (the U.S. largest seller of polycarbonate baby bottles) sits on the JPMA�s board of directors.

For the record, Avent told us they believe their bottles are safe and pose no heath threat to babies.

Q. Which bottles should we NOT use? Which ones are BPA-free?

Polycarbonate baby bottles make up about 90% of the bottle market. The most common polycarbonate bottle are Avent�s Natural Feeding Bottle and Dr. Brown�s Natural Flow. But other major baby product companies like Playtex and Gerber also make polycarbonate bottles.

Here are the alternatives that are BPA-free:

� Use glass bottles. Obviously, there is a risk of injury to baby or mom if the bottle is dropped, so glass isn�t a perfect alternative.

� Use bottles made of opaque plastic. These bottles (made of polyethylene or polypropylene) do not contain BPA.

� Consider a BPA-free plastic bottle. Born Free makes a BPA-free clear plastic bottle (Newbornfree.com) sold at Whole Foods. But these cost about $10 each, twice the price of Avent bottles.

� Use a drop-in system. For example the Playtex Drop-in System is BPA free (that is, the bottle liners do not contain BPA). Avent�s Tempo liners are another example.

Q. Is there a way to tell if a bottle has BPA?

A. Unfortunately, it isn�t easy. Here�s a general guide:

BAD:
� Bottles that have a #7 on their recycling label most likely are made of polycarbonate (and contain BPA).

GOOD:
� Bottles that have a #2, #4 , #5 are made of polyethylene or polypropylene�these do NOT have BPA.

We call on the government to require disclosure of which bottles have BPA, so consumers can make an informed choice.

Q. What about sippy cups? Breast pump collection bottles?

A. Basically, the same advice applies: avoid those made of polycarbonate plastic. Sippy cups made of opaque plastic are fine. Again, check the bottom of the cup for its recycling number (#7 should be avoided). For breast pump collection bottles, consider BPA-free bottles (such as those from Medela).

Q. I just bought $50 worth of Avent bottles. Are you saying I should throw them out?

A. Yes. We know this in an inconvenience�but if you think about it, buying replacement bottles would run only $50 to $100. When it comes to safety, we think this is a worthwhile investment.

In the last printing of Baby Bargains, we realize that we recommended Avent and Dr. Brown�s polycarbonate bottles and said that polycarbonate bottles were safe. This was written before the release of the latest BPA study and federal panel report last week.

We have changed our recommendation on this subject based on new scientific evidence and the results of the federal panel discussed earlier. We will be revising our book in a new printing later this year to reflect this advice. We realize this is of little comfort to a reader who just bought $50 worth of Avent bottles and can�t return them�but we owe it to all readers to get the best and accurate advice out there as soon as it is available.

(Note: the advice in this update differs slightly from what we previous wrote in Baby 411 3rd edition. In that book, we said parents could still use polycarbonate bottles if they limited washings/heated drying, etc. Given the latest scientific evidence, we will revise that book to reflect the above advice to STOP using these bottles altogether.)

1. Delta recalls cribs

CPSC, Delta Enterprise Corp. Announce Recall to Repair Portable Cribs

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announces the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firm below.
Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of product: Portable Cribs

Units: About 10,000

Manufacturer: Delta Enterprise Corp., of New York, N.Y.

Hazard: The crib slats can separate from the headboard, posing an
entrapment risk to young children. In addition, children can fall
through the slat opening.

Incidents/Injuries: Delta Enterprise Corp. has received eight reports of
crib slats separating. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The cribs are made of wood sold in three finishes
including: natural, cherry and white. Model numbers 4464-1 (white),
4464-2 (natural) and 4464-4 (cherry) and "Taiwan" are printed on the
mattress pad support board.

Sold at: Juvenile furniture stores nationwide from January 2004 through
February 2005 for about $100.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the crib immediately and contact
Delta Enterprise Corp. to arrange for two free replacement headboards.

Hi folks! We are just back from the big baby products show in Vegas and wanted to share news of a new Britax booster seat that is coming out. So, let�s get to the news:

1. First look: Britax to debut new booster seat in late 2004.

Britax will debut a new lower cost booster seat in the later this year. The �Parkway� booster seat will be a scaled down version of the BodyGuard seat but will holds kids from 30 to 100 pounds (the Bodyguard starts at 40). It will feature enhanced EPS foam side impact protection, one-handed head rest adjustments, two position recline and (new for Britax) cup holders! It will sell for $99, or about $20 less than the Bodyguard.

What do you miss? You don�t get the seat belt lock-off clips that appear on the Bodyguard (these keep the seat from tipping when a vehicle is cornering, etc). It also lacks armrests.

The Parkway booster will be out in the �fourth quarter,� Britax told us.

2. Bjorn recalls Active Carrier and Buggy Board (stroller attachment).

As we reported back in August, the Baby Bjorn Active carrier has been recalled. Below is the official recall. (NOTE: this recall does NOT affect the regular Bjorn; just the ACTIVE model). Also: Bjorn has recalled the Buggy Board stroller attachment. That recall is below.

Name of product: Baby Bj�rn Baby Carrier Active

Units: About 49,000

Manufacturer: Regal Lager Inc., of Kennesaw, Ga.

Hazard: The back support buckle can detach from the shoulder straps, posing a fall hazard to the baby.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 93 reports of the back support buckle detaching from the shoulder straps on the infant carrier. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled infant carriers were sold under brand name "Baby Bj�rn" which is printed on the front of the carriers and on the black molded plastic back support buckle. Model number 1-260 is printed on the care label on the strap of the carrier. The carriers are made of a cotton polyester blend fabric in black with red piping and blue with white piping. "Baby Carrier Active" is written on the packaging and above the warning label on the carrier.

Sold at: Specialty retail stores, catalogs and internet sites from September 2003 through August 15, 2004 for about $120.

Manufactured in: Sweden

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the carrier immediately and contact Regal Lager for instructions on returning the carriers for repair.

Name of product: Lascal "Buggy Board" stroller attachment

Units: About 11,500

Manufacturer: Regal Lager Inc., of Kennesaw, Ga.

Hazard: The Buggy Board's red connecting pins can break, causing the
board to partially detach from the stroller or carriage, posing a fall
hazard to the user.

Incidents/Injuries: Regal Lager Inc. has received two reports of the
Buggy Board disengaging from a stroller or carriage, resulting in falls
to children. One minor injury was reported.

Description: The Lascal "Buggy Board" is a wheeled board that attaches
to a stroller or baby carriage, allowing an older child to stand on the
board and ride behind the stroller between the arms of a parent or
caregiver. The product comes in black, blue, red and techno styles, and
has the words "Buggy Board" printed on the top center of the board, with
the name "Lascal" molded into the plastic on the bottom center of the
board. Buggy Boards with orange connecting pins are not included in the
recall.

Sold at: Specialty retail stores, catalogs and internet sites from
January 2003 through July 2004 for about $88.

Manufactured in: Sweden

Remedy: The manufacturer is providing free repair kits to consumers
consisting of orange replacement pins for these Buggy Boards.

Hi again folks. A couple of quick items today�a new recall on the Baby Bjorn Active carrier plus a correction to our previous report on Simmons cribs.

1. Baby Bjorn Active Carrier recalled

Astute readers have noticed the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier was pulled from store shelves in Babies R Us earlier this week. That was because of a �pending� recall of the carrier. We spoke with Regal Lager (the Bjorn�s maker) and they confirmed this, posting this notice on their web site:

Thank you for your inquiry into the pending recall to repair of the BABY BJORN� Baby Carrier Active. We have received a limited number of complaints that the buckle on the lumbar support may detach from the webbing on the shoulder straps.

There have been no reported injuries.

BABY BJORN� has responded to these complaints and developed a solution; a new improved buckle and safety strap. We are currently awaiting the arrival of parts from Sweden to repair all the carriers. As a precautionary measure, we have requested all our retailers to immediately stop selling the product and return everything in stock for repair. We are also in discussions with the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), and will work with them to inform all current consumers.

We ask that you stop using your BABY BJORN� Baby Carrier Active.

2. Correction: Simmons for sale, not closing

In our last newsletter, we reported that Simmons was exiting the crib and furniture business. Apparently, that was incorrect.

After our newsletter was emailed, Nancy Villars of Simmons contacted us to state that the company was for sale---but was not closing. Yes, the company has announced the shutdown of its Wisconsin factory that makes all the cribs and furniture. But Simmons said any potential buyer will continue production but most likely move it offshore.

We apologize for the confusion on this. Press accounts of the Wisconsin plant closing led us to believe the company was exiting the business entirely: �Simmons Juvenile Products Co. announced Friday it will close its doors after three-quarters of a century in operation, putting 261 people out of work,� read the account in the Post Crescent newspaper in Wisconsin.

So who will the new buyer be? And what will Simmons furniture and cribs look like under this new owner? That�s up in the air. �Nothing is settled,� said Simmons spokesperson Nancy Villars, who refused to identify the potential buyer.

Simmons said it will continue to supply parts to existing crib owners, no matter who the new owner of the company would be.

The big question: with the announced shutdown of the Wisconsin plant and no buyer officially identified, what would happen if no one steps forward to buy Simmons? Villars refused to speculate on that possible outcome.

So, we�d still advise caution for consumers considering buying furniture from this brand. We�d like to see how the ownership situation shakes out before we continue our longtime recommendation of Simmons.
