  • Contact Info
  • For each designer, we include their address and phone number. Does this mean you can call them up and order a dress over the phone? Are you kidding? Most designers only sell to authorized retailers. With the exception of outlet stores and special sales, like the Saturday bridal markets in New York City, you cannot buy a dress directly from the manufacturer.

Besides that, most gown designers/manufacturers have very bad phone manners. While you can call them to find the location of a dealer near you, don't expect them to give up any additional information about their dresses. This isn't L.L. Bean–some designers have been known to yell at brides over the phone, throw hysterical fits and worse. If you're having problems with a store or can't get a question answered, however, you can always contact the designer as a last resort.

What about a catalog? Most designers have catalogs–they just don't send them out to consumers. (We'll note the few that do in their individual reviews.) Finally, for most major manufacturers, we'll note their Registered Number or RN.

  • Also Known As
  • Designers sometimes have a plethora of pseudonums, advertising sub-names and separate division monikers. For example, you might see a dress ad for "Regency Bridal by Madeline Gardner". Then, you'll look up Regency in our book and find no listing. Why? Regency is part of Mori Lee, a major gown manufacturer that also advertises gowns under their own name (just to confuse you). Madeline Gardner, by the way, is the designer of all Mori Lee's gowns. In this section, we'll list any aliases for a designer.

  • Internet
  • Many designers are in the process of putting together websites. Some are already up and running; others are in development. We'll note each designer's website or other web locations where you may find their dresses.

What can you find on these sites? Some offer color catalogs with dress pictures, style numbers and even suggested retail prices. Others will offer less information, perhaps a designer profile and only a partial catalog on-line.

What will the future hold for these sites? Well, the bridal industry is buzzing with rumors that some designers (particularly those who do bridesmaids dresses) are considering taking consumers' orders directly over the Internet. Stay tuned.

  • Background
  • What's the designer's history? How long has the company been around? This brief section gives you background on the designer.
