Stanley Furniture responds to latest review


Glenn Prillaman of Stanley Furniture emailed us with corrections to a review we did of Stanley cribs in our latest BABY BARGAINS book. Here are his comments (edited for space here):
There are three major issues which seem to establish our rating according to the content of the copy in your book:

1. The retail price quoted ($800-1,000) is above the level at which our cribs are sold. The vast majority of our cribs are currently sold at retail prices between $599-699 and the highest price we have encountered through much research is $799. Given the differentiation in design & styling supported the quality level of our material construction and finishes, we are a better value in the marketplace than given credit.

2. You state that our cribs do not provide bumper tie access. This is a false statement. All Young America Baby cribs have openings in the crib ends to provide access to tie bumper pads in each corner. In fact, we have been recognized by the ASTM – American Society for Testing & Materials Crib Bedding Sub-Committee for providing this feature.

3. It is true that we experienced a CPSC recall on our cribs in 2004. The discovery of an assembly screw of improper length led to this recall. Although this was the result of a vendor not following our product specification and not the specification itself, we took action immediately notifying the CPSC when this error was discovered. We are first and foremost concerned about the safety of every child sleeping in a Young America crib or bed. The result was a voluntary recall on a small number cribs from a first run of production. To protect against such an error from reoccurring, we have changed the type of hardware completely and replaced it with a different design eliminating this type of hardware altogether.

In addition to these issues, we have carefully studied other manufacturers’ ratings within your book and would like to note certain features and benefits of our product not mentioned within our own rating but apparently important contributors to the highest ratings given:

♣ Our cribs are certified by the JPMA – Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. We are supporting members of that organization.

♣ Our cribs have three adjustable mattress height positions to use as the baby grows.

♣ Our cribs have the flexibility to be converted into a small day bed.

♣ Our cribs include a dovetailed storage drawer using ball-bearing side guides for smooth operation.

♣ The crib gate utilizes hidden hardware providing the sleek look today’s consumer desires.
