Time spills beans on new Bugaboo, the Bee

Time Magazine broke a press embargo on the newest Bugaboo, the Bee. So, we are a little late to the party, but here's the scoop.

Set to debut in September, the Bee is a mini-Bugaboo---it can be used from birth, has a flat-fold (with the seat) with one-button release. But the price? $529? Yes, it will still feature the rich protein flavor of Bugaboo's euro-chic fashion, but $529? Wouldn't a Mac or Peg do the same thing at half the price? And where is the basket?

Yes, the seat is reversible, so baby can face the parent or forward. And as daddytypes noted in a droll aside, the cup holder will be out in 2009.

Shameless iPod tie-in

Leave it to Kolcraft for debuting a meaningless baby product line that is a cynical attempt to appeal to Gen Y parents. The iBaby line of strollers and play yards feature (you guessed it) iPod holders and speakers so Mom can continue to shuffle tunes as she pushes baby to the park. Kolcraft: Think Dumb.

In other Kolcraft news, elliptical tubing will make a debut in the new Contours line, featuring a stroller, play yard and high chair. Kolcraft won an innovation award from the JPMA for their Tour Sport Universal stroller, but we don’t see the big whoop here. It holds all major brand of car seats and is an umbrella stroller----and what is special about that?

New voice control gates

Evenflo plans to roll out the first baby gate that can open based on voice control. The gate can be trained to recognize three voices (mom, dad . . . and the nanny?), which then releases the lock. If that is a bit high tech for you, a simpler version will have a remote control button that can trigger the gate. Price: $40 to $90, depending on the options you want. Coming out in December.

Product Review section to debut! Server upgrade in progess!

Hi folks. Just a couple of updates to our web site:

First, we are going to launch the product reviews part of our web page next week. We will first beta test the section with car seats and strollers. Eventually we will add other categories (cribs, monitors, high chairs) over the next month or so. Readers will be able to post reviews of products they've used, based on a letter grade scale. Unlike Amazon, you will be able to read parent reviews of ALL strollers out there on the market (not just those carried by Babies R Us). And unlike other sites, we won't pull negative reviews since we aren't selling anything. All in all, a very exciting addition to our site!

Second, we are upgrading our server to handle more traffic. This move should take place late this week; the message boards will go down for about an hour. But we hope the new speedy server will make this go faster around here!

That's the news,
Alan & Denise
